On Wednesday, Time Warner said that revenue at AOL – which has been in a seemingly perpetual state of transition from a subscriber business to an advertising business – declined 23percentto to $1.1 billion.
But the problem with AOL, says Michael Nathanson, an analyst at Sanford Bernstein, is that its declining subscriber business still accounts for far more of its revenues than its growing advertising business.Many shareholders, Mr Icahn included, are also worried about Time Warner's cable business.
The highly profitable subscriber business is going away, and that is baked into the stock.
AOL's are particularly poor which is surprising considering that the company now has 9 million subscribers after its recent acquisition of CompuServe's subscriber business.
For now Sherman-Presser tells me that there will be no ads or any fees at all associated with the creation or broadcast of videos, although given that LinkedIn has a strong premium (paying) subscriber business, and is also working all the time to build out its advertising business, it seems like an obvious progression for both of these to come online at some point.
