Edited by Edward Craig and assisted by thirty specialist subject editors, the REP consists of ten volumes of the world's most eminent philosophers writing for the needs of students and teachers of philosophy internationally.
The pattern for future encyclopaedias was established: for any substantial work, it would be necessary not only to have contributions from the experts of the day, but it would also be essential to have subject editors who could supervise the coverage and content in each area of knowledge.
The REP is a project on an unparalleled scale: * Over 2000 entries ranging from 500 to 15,000 words in length - thematic, biographical and national * 10 volumes consisting of over 5 million words of text plus considerable bibliographic material * A Chief Editor and thirty specialist Subject Editors from across the world * Over 1200 authors from all over the world.
These entries fall under 35 different general subject areas in philosophy, and for each subject area, there are often two or more subject editors who sit on our Editorial Board (there are now 60 members on our Board).
The journal thus covers a broad range of subjects, from natural sciences to socio-economics, which are represented by a board of subject editors with different fields of expertise (see section 'Editorial Board').
