Because repetitive elements are known to play a significant role in genome size variation, we constructed random sheared small insert genomic libraries from 12 representative Oryza species and conducted a comprehensive study of the repetitive element composition, distribution and phylogeny in this genus.
The most abundant trimeric motifs in both M. acuminata and M. balbisiana genomes were ATT/AAT, ATA/TAT, GAA/TTC, and AAG/CTT, while Hribova et al. found GAA to be the most abundant trinucleotide motif in their study of the repetitive regions of the 'Calcutta 4' genome [ 37].
