Importantly, in vivo studies with fly mutant forms with reduced Dscam1 expression suggested that the diversity of the Dscam1 isoform population, rather than the specific individual isoforms, is critical for proper neuronal connectivity in vivo [ 1, 7], although allele-specific phenotypes raised from few isoforms were observed for a small number of specific Dscam1 mutants [ 10].
