And despite the animosity among the unions and their employers, Ruth Milkman, a sociology professor at the CUNY Graduate Center who studies unions, said they have an important common ground.
According to a 2011 study, union busting tactics are increasingly common and employers are more emboldened than ever to stop workers organizing.

"As the immigrant population starts to spread to other cities, you are going to see more and more attempts to recreate the kind of victories the unions have had here," said Peter Dreier, a professor at Occidental College who has studied unions at the local and national levels.
The study, "Unions, Norms and the Rise in U.S. Wage Inequality," found that the decline in union power and density since 1973 explained a third of the increase in wage inequality among men since then, and a fifth of the increased inequality among women.
