In the JUPITER study (Justification for the Use of Statins in Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin), which enrolled 17,802 nondiabetic adults, rosuvastatin intake >1.9 years increased the incidence of diabetes by ∼20% (26).
Instead, study justification rests on the very large pool of eligible patients (122, 896 health plan members with EMR-identified CMP from 2006 to 2010) and analysis relies on precise estimation of potential effects, rather than on statistical decision-making.
While an early trial (the West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study [WOSCOPS]) suggested possible protection against diabetes (1), the JUPITER study (Justification for the Use of Statins in Prevention: An Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin) documented a 25% increase in diabetes risk with statin treatment (3 vs. 2.4%, P = 0.01) (2).
The latter project brings together radiologists and physicists from leading European academic institutions to study CT justification and radiation dose optimization and measurement and to design practical tools for improving practice (e.g., clinical decision trees and optimized CT techniques).
Themes included paradigms, team working, quality of studies, justifications for using mixed methods and publishing studies.
Increased number of sexual intercourse partners [ 17], sexual favors, rejection, intoxication [ 4] or an association with peer-drinking [ 18], breakdown in conflict resolution [ 19], and jealousy [ 20] have also been suggested as both contributors to, and in one study justifications [ 21] of dating violence.
Game semantics of Justification Logic and Dynamic Epistemic Logic with justifications were studied in (Renne 2008, Renne 2009).
Taken together, these studies provide justification for generating the study reported here.
The current study provides justification for future large-scale studies to verify the reproducibility of our findings.
