The multi-laminate structure of the cornea presents a unique barrier design and opportunity for investigation using Q3D modeling.
These changes can be explained using the conceptual model proposed by Roberts [6], in which the lamellar collagen structure of the cornea is conceived of as a series of stacked fibrils with interlamellar spaces filled with an extracellular matrix between each layer.
The structure of the cornea prior to culture (0 h) and at 7, 14, and 18 days in culture was evaluated by staining with hematoxylin/eosin, and by ultrastructural analysis that included a morphometric study of the type and number of adhesion complexes.
Optical coherence tomography [ 12] was chosen to image the structure of the cornea.
These differences are revealed by geometrical changes at a macroscopic scale upon deformation, but are likely the result of changes in the microscopic structure of the cornea.
