We adapted the WfMC [ 29] generic structure for a workflow to describe FReDoWS.
The dependency graph shows the structure of part of a workflow consisting of cross-validation fold generation combined with multiple parameter sweeps, which generates the large number of tasks, represented by yellow, green or blue dots in the image.
WIST modules are configured using text-file templates, which may be generated automatically using the included WIST Builder tool, or written in a flexible language that specifies only the structure of the workflow and the visual and semantic attributes of each input component.

Besides this performance advantage, another important advantage of eHive is that scientists are able to modify the structure of the workflow during the execution course of the analysis.
The implementation of the whole software actually consists in declaring the structure of the workflow in terms of FastFlow objects (i.e., farm and pipelines) and filling white boxes with sequential code.

While OPM graphs are able to describe aspects of a workflow execution, capturing the structure of the workflows themselves is understandably beyond the scope of the OPM specification, since the graphs may be generated by a broad variety of processes, which may not be formal workflows at all.
In many cases, users apply an automatic layout algorithm early in a workflow to visually check the overall structure of a network.
