This study was undertaken primarily to test the hypothesis that young children are more strongly obliged than adults to perceptually integrate components of the speech signal.
The novel hypothesis to emerge from that study was that children may actually be more strongly obliged than adults to perceptually fuse speech signals, and that idea formed the basis of the present study.
