The questions were based on something called the Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale, in which respondents ranked their present and prospective satisfaction on a scale of zero to ten.
This approach corresponds with Cantril's (1965) "Self-Anchoring Striving Scale," in which the good or bad life is hoped to be self-defined.
The plausible view has generally been held that the military strive for war, in which they attain greater resources and can satisfy their status seeking and, sometimes, also an aspiration for direct and full political power.
