A striking simile, no?
Brzezinski's is full of wonkish detail and some truly leaden language: "... with the potential international benefits of the foregoing unfortunately vitiated by the cumulatively destructive consequences of continued and maybe even somewhat expanded.... " Kagan prefers to paint with a broad brush, sprinkling a memorable metaphor here, a striking simile there.

In "Memorial," the British poet Alice Oswald has had the provocative idea of boiling down the poem to two of its most striking features: the gruesome fatalities and the similes that often lie in pastoral counterpoint to the action.
On the other hand, there are aspects of Bolaño's style that are relatively robust: the big, headlong, almost unstoppable sentences; the striking changes of pace; the repetition of keywords; the "as if" similes in which the vehicle acquires a life and momentum of its own.
Striking details about her are thrown out in asides or hinted at in similes, never to be heard of again.
