Further work needs to be undertaken to determine whether there is an association between a student's ability to map characters correctly onto a phylogenetic tree, an understanding of parsimony as a criterion for evaluating the strength of hypotheses, and/or a student's understanding of a tree as a depiction of ancestor descendant relationships.
