The secondary aims of the study are to compare the efficacy of these programs on functional performance, psychological parameters, quality of life, muscle strength, physical activity levels and cost-effectiveness and to examine longer-term outcomes over a 9-month follow up period.
Slow gait speed, muscle weakness (grip strength), low activity level, self-reported weight loss and exhaustion were assessed at baseline with residents categorized as "normal" or "impaired" using the methods described in Table 1.
Anthropometric measurements, comorbidities, smoking, functional exercise capacity, peripheral muscle strength, physical activity level, health related quality of life, patients' perceived benefit, physical therapy compliance, motivation level, level of effective mucus clearance, exacerbation symptoms and health care contacts due to COPD will be recorded.
The intervention group improved significantly more than the comparison group in physical strength and physical activity levels, both of which were evaluated by means of questionnaires.
