Due to the surface proximity of coal seams, mining has predominantly been open-cut which involves removing large volumes of overlying strata (referred to as spoil) to rapidly and completely extract economic coal seams at depths up to 200 m.
Having identified the Flattops One sandstones, Jasper Forest bed/Rainbow Forest Bed, and Camp Butte beds as all being stratigraphically distinct, it becomes clear that the strata referred to as the "Jim Camp Wash beds" by Heckert and Lucas [11] and Woody [12] actually occur at two separate stratigraphic levels (Figure 5, Figure 7 9).
