Use a running stitch, with needle and thread, along the side seams for added support.
On large socks you should have six stitches per needle, and on smaller ones you should have five.
When you are making a knit stitch, insert the needle into the stitch from front to back, and insert the tip of the needle behind the yarn, pull the yarn through the loop and slip the inserted stitch off the left needle.
