Motion and inertia force feedback produced on the augmented simulator give the users a haptic sensory stimulus input regarding spatial movement and ground contact forces.
To characterize this noise-mediated mechanism, we investigated whether stimulus input, neural adaptation, and inhibitory modulations (thought to underlie perceptual switches) interacted with noise in such a way that the system produced stochastic resonance.
Modelling suggested that the reduction in AVP and CRH secretion observed during transport was most likely due to a reduction in stimulus input, with a significant contribution from cortisol negative feedback only on AVP secretion.
We start with a BCM neuron that receives a stimulus input x stochastically from a set ({ mathbf{x}^{(1)}, mathbf{x}^{(2)}}) with equal probabilities, that is, (Pr[mathbf{x}(t)=mathbf{x}^{(1)} ]=Pr[mathbf{x}(t)=mathbf {x}^{(2)} ]= frac{1}{2}).
In humans, similar observations have been made [6] where highly synchronized EEG activity occurs in response to stimulus input.
However, when the size of the stimulus input is low (δS <1), the mean stimulus per site increases as a sub-linear function of the drive.

As envisioned by Stark, the concept applies only to motor systems that have multiple stimulus inputs and/or response behaviors.
To maintain the consistency of stimulus inputs and yet minimize possible prediction of upcoming stimuli, the stimuli were triggered using a computer and delivered for seven times at randomized intervals within a few minutes.
This property of our hypothetical HL neurons is reminiscent of neurons in the fly's visual system whose firing rates scale with the variance in prior stimulus inputs [21].
The input-sensitive group contains units that either increase or decrease their firing rates in a monotonic fashion with changes in the amount of stimulus inputs (Fig. 7A and 7B for an example of a drop intensity-responsive neuron, and Fig. 7C and 7D for an example of an air-blow intensity-responsive neuron).
In contrast, intensity-invariant responsive neurons are characterized by similar changes in their firing rates irrespective of the magnitude of the stimulus inputs (see Fig. 7E and 7F, for an example of a drop intensity-invariant neuron; and Fig. 7G and 7H for an example of an air-blow event-invariant neuron, respectively).
