Therefore, we repeated the cycle until the network wide response to the stimuli dropped below threshold in three consecutive cycles.
However, response rates to the unreinforced stimuli dropped below two by the end of Phase 1 (see Fig. 1).
The important consequence of this sensitization is that the threshold for opening by temperature stimuli drops such that normal body temperature may be sufficient to activate nociceptors and to elicit action potentials.

This crossover is also visible in the experimental data, in that around 450-ms poststimulus onset the average firing rate of the response to stimulus Eff drops below the responses to the rest of the Eff images (Fig. 3 c ).
It increased gradually after stimulus onset and dropped immediately when the reward was delivered after the fixed 2.0 s period at stimulus end.
The fact that the seal learned to choose the brighter stimulus is proven by a chance level performance with new stimuli in Set 2. The brightness contrast between blue and green in these new stimulus pairs was always high for the rods, and since the seal had learned to choose the brighter stimulus, its performance dropped to chance level.
Responses were apparent at ∼10 and 10 rod photons/cm/s but were less convincing when the stimulus intensity was dropped to 10 rod photons/cm/s.
