The effect of smoking status on healthcare utilisation and work absenteeism was analysed in a two-step hurdle approach: In a first step we used multiple logistic regression models to calculate odds ratios of healthcare utilisation or inability to work as a function of smoking status, age, sex, education, alcohol consumption and physical activity.
