There is currently no scientific data available on the status of animal welfare on beef suckler farms in Ireland.
The survey questions asked about age, gender, legal status (asylum seeker or refugee status granted), employment status, and types of welfare benefits being received.
Register data regarding mortality, causes of death, hospitalisation/rehospitalisation, emergency room visits, outpatient visits, healthcare costs, visits to the general practitioner, medication use, employment status and payment of welfare benefits (sick leave payment and early retirement pension) will be collected at 24 months to assess the long-term effects of the intervention (table 1).

At that time, a study on the social status and utilisation of welfare facilities among refugees was being conducted by the Institute for Sociological and Economic Research at the Erasmus University Rotterdam – which also included refugees from Afghanistan, Iran and Somalia – so it was decided not to approach the same municipalities.
The categorization of welfare status (inadequate, adequate, good, very good and excellent) is shown in Figure 3.
The welfare "gold standard" i.e. the definition of welfare status (no welfare remarks vs. one or more welfare remarks) against which the performance of potential welfare indicators in the database was to be evaluated, was based on the number of animal-based measurements where a herd did not score among the 10% worst.
In this study, adjusting for most potential confounders, including indicators of socioeconomic status, such as receipt of welfare and parental education, made little difference to risk estimates.
In contrast, HRV gives information about autonomic flexibility and reflects the capacity for regulated emotional responding (Appelhans & Luecken, 2006); hence, HRV is considered an indicator of welfare status in animals (von Borell et al., 2007).
