If motion-defined form persistence reflects a transient motion-induced facilitation of static form perception that decays over time, one should be able to objectively measure the facilitation.
Interestingly, despite these problems, children born very prematurely often perform relatively well on tasks requiring static form perception (e.g., Jakobson et al., 2001; Taylor et al., 2009).
Compared to static images, audio perception may require a greater processing workload [7], as sound clips have temporal extension.
In fact, some studies showed that motor-perceptual interactions are induced by visual perception of static stimuli, such as face expressions [50], static snapshots of dynamic actions [1], [2], [51], pictures of interactions between hands and tools [52], or symbols and letters [53] [59].
Descriptive analysis (DA) and temporal dominance of sensation (TDS) were applied to profile static and temporal sensory perception.
In contrast, our current findings demonstrated that auditory motion information triggered motion perception to static visual stimuli and drove motion perception against global visual motion signals.
Here, we show that sounds containing no motion or positional cues can induce illusory visual motion perception for static visual objects.
If the pattern of results from previous research, conducted on perception of static posed photographs of emotion, is to be reflected in the present study using natural dynamic stimuli, we would expect to see similarities in response patterns across cultures in combination with cultural variations in ratings of intensity.
Although spatial superiority of vision over audition has been confirmed in motion processing [10] [12], it was recently reported that the alternation of sound location could induce the illusory visual motion perception of static visual stimuli in peripheral visual field [5], [6].
Other potential uses for these stimuli include investigations of the perception of static and dynamic emotional body language.
