The no true Scotsman fallacy (Dowden [2010]) occurs as a device to redirect accusations from creationists when the discussion has reached a state of repeated tu quoque arguments, such as in a debate on the "Darwinist" or "Christian" roots of Nazism.
In particular, fugu and spotted puffer appear to represent an ancestral state of 9 repeats whereas medaka has lost repeat 7, tilapia has duplicated repeat 3, and stickleback has both lost repeat 8 and duplicated repeat 9 two times in separate events.
We observed that most of the SSR alleles from 9930 had a corresponding Gy14 allele that was shorter (i.e., a "contraction" if the 9930 allele is arbitrarily considered the 'initial' state of the repeat), and that the relative frequency of contractions and expansions varied in relation to the repeat length of the SSRs, with an increasing proportion of contractions found for longer repeats.
This observation suggests that an unequal-crossing over event (Figure 4) may have occurred between repeat 1 and repeat 3 giving rise to a repeat expansion from an ancestral of 3 BRC repeats to a derived state of 5 repeats historically in the D. yakuba lineage.
