During surgical residency, I'd learned to control the startle reaction.
Startle reaction, also called Startle Pattern, an extremely rapid psychophysiological response of an organism to a sudden and unexpected stimulus such as a loud sound or a blinding flash of light.
So, for a soldier injured in a bomb blast, anything like the sound of an explosion or the odor of burning is now a potent conditioned stimulus that can evoke the trauma and trigger symptoms of PTSD, like a flashback or startle reaction.
We also recorded the EMG activity from the orbicularis oculi to monitor the startle reaction.
The force from the startle reaction was recorded by an accelerometer with SR-LAB software (San Diego Instruments).
