High-field or low-field seeking Stark states are selected spectroscopically and experience a force either towards or away from the dipole, respectively.
Molecules in low-field-seeking Stark states experience a force which reduces their kinetic energy.
The Stark states labelled A to F on the righthand side of the figure were selectively excited and subjected to the deflection fields.
For example, if Rydberg states with |m|=1 are prepared in Li, Fig. 8(b), the Stark states do not possess s-character.
The primary difference between the Stark maps in Fig. 8(c) and (d) is that in the former the outermost Stark states are absent.
The result of this is that for F>F IT the Stark states lose their electric dipole moments and cannot be efficiently manipulated in these fields.
The fluorescence lifetimes of |m|=2 Stark states with values of n>30, which are typically prepared experimentally, exceed 140 μs.
b Electron probability density in a plane containing the electric field axis for n=8 Stark states with k=−7,−1,+1 and +7.
