Halifax "standardises" the figures from its mortgage approvals data so that instead of comparing the prices of one set of houses one month with another set of houses the next, it tracks the price of a "typical house".
No reliable data are currently available to standardise these figures, which is why no between countries comparison was performed.
Using census data from 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911, we have accordingly standardised our incidence figures for the contemporary sample to the rates observed for the historical sample.
