Two stages of questionnaires asked participants to rate the relative importance of suggested checklist items; the second questionnaire was refined based on feedback from the previous one.
To classify participants according to their stage-of-change, questionnaires have been developed to assess readiness to change in individuals.
The questionnaire's preliminary versions were developed according to the standard stages of questionnaire validation [ 20, 21], including evaluation of content validity, item clarity and construct validity [ 15].
At this stage of questionnaire development, a change score of −0.1 to −0.2 is the most appropriate estimation for determining a threshold for treatment response.
This approach has been tried by relatively few instrument developers [ 39- 41], largely due to the time and budgetary resources associated with the initial stages of questionnaire design.
It should be noted, however, that no restriction on mMRC was used in recruiting patients with COPD for the qualitative stage of questionnaire development where the 37-items used in this study were developed [ 12].
This is further supported by distribution-based estimations of the MID using methods described by Revicki et al 8 and Wyrwich et al. 9 Thus, a threshold of −0.1 to −0.2 for the score range of 1 4, supported by anchor-based and distribution-based methods, seems reasonable at this stage of questionnaire development.
