Correa (1992) hypothesised that carcinogenesis of the stomach is a multistage process, and the progression from normal epithelial cells to tumour cells involves at least six stages: superficial gastritis, chronic atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia of the complete type followed by the incomplete type, gastric adenoma, dysplasia and carcinoma.
Patients were allocated into three groups depending on tumour stage: Ta, superficial tumours; T1, superficial invasive tumours; and T2 T4, muscle-invasive tumours.
