The highways outside the city of Boulder are peppered with the burrows of prairie dogs, a species of rodent related to the squirrel, and also, it seems, blessed with a degree of political awareness unusual among herbivorous burrowing animals.
Pheasants, squirrels and rabbits are also regular guests.
The specific vector of this spirochete is the Ornithodoros hermsi tick (7 ), which is found in higher-elevation coniferous forests where its preferred rodent hosts, primarily squirrels and chipmunks, are also found (6 ).

While pine martens are once again thriving in parts of Scotland (and, surprise, surprise, these are the places in which red squirrels also survive and grey squirrels are absent), across England and Wales they are functionally extinct.
Protection plans for animals including bats, otter and red squirrels have also been put in place.
