Preterm birth can occur either iatrogenically or spontaneously, which further encompasses (i) preterm prelabor rupture of membranes and (ii) spontaneous preterm labor and delivery with intact membranes [ 6], hereafter referred to as spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) [ 6]. sPTB, which is the subject of the present work, accounts for at least 50% of all preterm births [ 7– 9].
