8 15 p.m. | Updated A phone hacking scandal and restless shareholders may have forced Rupert Murdoch to split News Corporation into two companies, but on Monday he celebrated the decision by pouring Veuve Clicquot Champagne over the head of his newest editor.
Rupert Murdoch has confirmed he is to split News Corporation, the $54bn global media company he has built over 60 years, into two separate publicly listed companies – newspapers, book publishing and education; and media and entertainment.
She and others said they had been unable to find out just how the tax breaks were split between the corporation and the municipality collecting the fee, but several people interviewed said they suspected the corporations received more than 90percentt of the benefits.
In June 2013 News Corporation split its publishing and television/film holdings.
There are still an enormous number of details to be worked out in any spinoff, including exactly how to split up News Corporation's assets.
But the structure of the coming split of News Corporation could give Mr. Murdoch considerable resources to indulge his love of newspapers.
Mr. Murdoch's voice on the tapes sounds notably different from the more subdued tone he took when he spoke before Parliament about the hacking scandal that closed News of the World, forced the company to withdraw its takeover bid of British Sky Broadcasting, also known as BSkyB, and helped lead to the split of News Corporation into two separate companies.
Investors are worried that some of those subscribers may switch to BT, and that BSkyB, whose biggest shareholder is 21st Century Fox, one of the two units created in the split of News Corporation, will face additional financial pressures to maintain its array of sports rights.
