Event characteristics refer to the hazard's frequency, its magnitude or (physical) impact, speed of occurrence, length of potential warning lead time, event duration, spatial extent or sphere of action, damage potential, predictability, and controllability (Burton et al. 1993; Alexander 1999; Dikau and Weichselgartner 2005).
