Observations on several specimens of nerve cords of Metaperipatus blainvillei and Epiperipatus biolleyi sectioned in sagittal, horizontal, and transverse planes, or examined as whole-mount preparations (E. biolleyi: 3 specimens; M. blainvillei: 22 specimens) failed to reveal distinct segmental thickenings (cf. Figures 5C and 5D; Figure 6; further data not shown).

The presence in most ANCT specimens of nerve-born PRiMA-linked AChE tetramers (Fig. 4), their lack from glottis- and supraglottis cancerous pieces, and the presence in them of PRiMA-linked BChE tetramers agreed with previous histological observations showing tumour-associated remodelling and loss of nerve terminals along head and neck cancer development and motor nerve invasion [ 56].
A couple of methodological issues deserve special discussion: first, the fixation procedure of nerve specimens that plays a critical role in the histological analysis.
The exact determination of myelin sheath-axon ratios is especially essential when interpreting pathological processes in peripheral nerves [ 17], and neuropathies are currently diagnosed on the basis of clinical information integrated with the morphometric analysis of nerve specimens [ 13].

In the histopathological examination, no residual cancer in the resected specimen was detected; the nodule showed wavy proliferation of nerve fibers without atypia nor mitosis, and a hyalinized stroma was seen between nerve bundles (Fig. 4).
