High levels of EphA2 have been reported in diverse cell lines and clinical specimens, including breast, colon, prostate, non-small cell lung cancers, aggressive melanomas and glioblastoma [14], [18].
All removed specimens including breast tumour and normal breast tissue were evaluated by gross and histological observations.
Contrary to the above-mentioned studies, it has been reported that caveolin-1 levels were reduced in a variety of cancer cell lines and cancer specimens (including human breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer and sarcoma) (Lee et al, 1998; Racine et al, 1999; Bender et al, 2000; Wiechen et al, 2001a, b).
On primary breast cancers, HER2 status was determined on formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues including breast core biopsies, vacuum assisted biopsies and/or surgical specimens.
Material I was a breast cancer progression tissue array constructed by using cutting-edge matrix assembly [ 35] and represented 180 unmatched patient specimens, including 40 normal breast tissues, 20 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), 100 invasive ductal carcinomas (IDCs), and 20 lymph node breast cancer metastases [ 22].
Cohort II was a breast cancer progression array of specimens from Thomas Jefferson University (Philadelphia, PA, USA) constructed by cutting edge matrix assembly [ 37], comprising 40 healthy breast tissues and 140 breast carcinoma specimens, including ductal carcinoma in situ, primary invasive ductal carcinomas (grades 1 to 3), and lymph node metastases [ 38].
We developed and screened TMAs containing 51 breast cancer specimens, including 18 HER2+, 15 HER2−, and 18 triple-negative (ER−/PgR−/HER2−) samples; we chose these breast cancer subtypes to focus on primarily because they are treated with chemotherapeutic agents that are ABCC10 substrates.
Further studies are underway to analyse the expression and function of LSD1 in a larger cohort of breast cancer specimens including patients' survival data to evaluate the prognostic relevance of LSD1 in breast carcinoma.
