Participating countries reported cases of invasive H. influenzae disease to a central database, with basic demographic details, clinical syndrome, outcome, specimen site, and serotyping data on isolates.
Data compiled for 100 clinical isolates (n = 34 E. coli and n = 66 K. pneumoniae) includes specimen site for each isolate.
Demographic information included the patient's date of birth and gender; and other data elements included admission date, ordering acute care facility, specimen site, and whether the specimen was taken as a screening specimen or as part of clinical work-up.
Data from the remaining 616,720 tests were included in the analysis of results by specimen site.
The following data was available for all isolates collected between 2005 and 2012: specimen source, date specimen obtained, sex, age, and specimen site.
Table 1 lists the sampling demographics, signs and symptoms, severity of illness and other covariates, stratified by specimen site.
Specimen site is indicated since samples were from a mix of primary tumors, metastases and tumors that had recurred.
With regard to the specimen site, P. aeruginosa were isolated from wound swabs (n = 44), blood (n = 29), urine (n = 22), sputum (n = 11), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (n = 2), genital sites (n = 2), catheter tip (n = 2), central venous catheter (n = 4), ear swab (n = 2), pleural tissue specimen (n = 2), corneal graft (n = 1), and breast abscess (n = 1).
Cases reported to COVIS are classified into foodborne, nonfoodborne, or unknown transmission routes on the bases of the reported exposure (seafood consumption, marine/estuarine water contact, unknown) and specimen site (gastrointestinal, blood, or other normally sterile site; skin or soft tissue, other nonsterile site; unknown).
Results are shown in Tables 1 and 2. All operating theatre air specimens (sites A1 A3) exhibited a decrease in colony counts at the end of surgery (mean reduction 36.4%).
