Computationally derived predictions of fatigue life are compared for superelastic NiTi specimens considering the material as (1) a continuum material with homogenous behaviour, and (2) a textured material with anisotropic granular behaviour, presented using both realistic and idealised microstructural features.
A total of sixteen specimens considering the following primary system parameters were tested: two slenderness ratios (24, 40), two load eccentricities (25 mm, 50 mm), two diameter-to-thickness ratios of the steel tube (133, 160), and two continuity conditions for the steel tube (continuous, discontinuous at mid-height).
From an osseointegration point of view, the optimum dental implant configuration presents a major advantage over the other specimens considered: the bone-implant contact surface is greater than in the other ones and the maximum von Mises stress in the jaw remains close to minimum values.
Two different optimization approaches were proposed, namely (i) a one-step procedure designing both specimen shape and loading path by using rigid tools and (ii) a sequential incremental technique designing the specimen shape and the loading path of the specimen considering local displacements.

First, that the architecture of trabecular bone can accurately predict the mechanical stiffness characteristics of bone specimens when considering the combination of volume fraction and fabric, which is a measure of architectural anisotropy.
Thus, we can discard the first of our two possible explanations and assume that MLL-1 likely represents the most common Souri cultivar [ 17]; indeed a specimen considered to represent the Souri cultivar was found to belong to MLL-1 (Tugetdhalt et al. unpubl. results).
In this context, the notions of both loading and response variables, which characterize the loading path applied to the specimen considered and its response path, are fundamental.
