The main characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD; i.e. Asperger syndrome, autistic disorder or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified) are qualitative impairment of social interaction, qualitative impairments in communication and restricted and repetitive stereotyped patterns of behaviour, interests and activities (American Psychiatric Association, 2000).
