With the "five sites mutation" mode for opsin gene evolution, the probability of speciation increased with increasing mutation rate (Fig. 2f).
We observed that in a large part of the parameter space the probability of speciation increased with decreasing dispersal distance and size of the mating area, and with increasing local carrying capacity, population size and relative strength of female preference.
In addition, in most of our models, we simulated 5,000 generations, but when simulations ran for 10,000 generations, the probability of speciation increased 1.2-fold (results not shown).

It is only when ecological selection is relatively strong that ecological introgression is less likely and hybrid speciation increases in frequency (Fig. 2).
Speciation increases diversity and steps-up natural selection which results in the progress of evolution.

For BAMM analyses, the results of rate-through-time dynamics indicate that speciation rates increased around 2 Ma under two calibration scenarios (Additional file 2: Figure S4).
An increase in mutational genetic variation causes increases in phenotypic variation that can facilitate both speciation (via increased adaptive potential in new niches or marginal environments) and extinction (via increased mutational load [ 16, 17]).
