As projection strength was rated ordinally in the data set provided by Scannell et al. (1995), we approximated the actual metric projection strength to vary over three orders of magnitude across sparse, intermediate and dense projections.

Existence of projections was given qualitatively as either absent ('0') or present, where the presence was described by ordinal weights as sparse ('1'), intermediate ('2'), or dense ('3'3.
More specifically, areas of a lower type appeared to possess a larger number of sparse and intermediate projections added to a backbone of dense connections which remains uniform across areas of all structural types (Fig. 8).
All low (type 1,2,3 and 4) and intermediate sparse (type 5) and intermediate lucent (type 8) densities were called insufficient.
With the increase in the dose of HA14-1, the population of cells with activated caspase 9 becomes more abundant, with early caspase 9 activation represented by a slight increase in FLICA fluorescence, and complete caspase 9 activation represented by over tenfold increase in FLICA fluorescence, and with very sparse (<5%) intermediate events (Fig. 2c).
Although knockout keratinocytes form substantial numbers of desmosome-like junctions and have a relatively normal intercellular distribution of desmosomal cadherins, their cytoplasmic plaques are sparse and anchoring of intermediate filaments is defective.
We present this remarkable observation in a different form in Fig. 8, which depicts the mean number of dense, intermediate and sparse projections averaged across areas of a structural type.
This representation underlines that the number of dense projections remains roughly constant, while the number of intermediate and sparse projections decreases notably with structural type, as revealed by the above correlation analyses.
Interestingly, we found that only a sparse network of signaling intermediates was recruited upon engagement of the antigen receptor.
We see from Table 1 that this particular scenario required 164 SParSE estimates (30 initial, 71 intermediate, and 30 final) in addition to 33 intermediate event computations in order to reach the solution hyperplane.
Figure 4 displays all 215 SParSE samples (30 initial, 155 intermediate, and 30 final) for this scenario.
