As is evident from the Figure 3A, sequence conservation of the SLC6A3 locus across phylogenies at most is very limited: Sparse conserved elements are confined to coding sequences whilst the regulatory regions, including promoter, introns and 3'-UTR do not exhibit conservation (Vertebrate Multiz Alignment and Conservation, 44 species).
As long as annotation of non-coding elements is still sparse, sequence conservation might be a reasonable proxy for an analysis similar to the one presented here.
