Based on the locations of public and private wells, we determined that the Barnstable Water Pollution Control Facility (BWPCF) was the only source of wastewater effluent with the potential to impact the drinking water of this study population.
A further complication is that Gallagher et al. (2010) stated that they "determined that the BWPCF was the only source of wastewater effluent with the potential to impact the drinking water of this study population"; however, we doubt that.
We compared reported microbial communities in various sources of wastewater and textile effluents from different countries (Table 5).
Seattle, a major seaport for commerce with Asia, has container shipping, as well as warehousing facilities that are located northwest and west of the monitoring site, and the Port of Seattle contributes the largest source of oil combustion effluents in Seattle (Kim et al. 2004; Maykut et al. 2003).
Effluent of municipal sewage treatment plants is a well established and constantly scrutinized source of organic wastewater compounds (OWCs) detectable in the environment (1– 4).
The major source of both nutrients were wastewater effluents (>90%), with the Tonghui River carrying the effluents from the Gaobeidian WWTP contributing >50%.
Th e minimization of the use of water source and, therefore, the reduction of effluent generation, has been an increasing concern in the chemical industry.
In the pre-design of the plant several raw water sources were evaluated, including two sources of fresh water, effluent of an industrial WWTP, effluent of a communal WWTP and seawater.
Also, subsequent removal by flocculation and the possibility of better results by adaptation of microbes in textile effluent medium (where the carbon source is only in the form of effluent) has been observed (Pagga and Brown 1986).
The effect of higher flows on removal efficiencies in the WWTP are also assessed, along with implications for high flows as a disproportionate source of compounds from treated effluents.
