Using a directed coding approach, each source was categorized into one of four categories: supports screening, does not support screening, unclear, or no position.
The source of milk was categorized as one of: Mbarara dairy production areas, Nakasongola/Luweero production areas, peri-urban and urban areas of Kampala (Figure 2, Figure 3).
Source of referral was categorized into Immigration, Primary Medical Doctor, and Other (self-referrals and walk-ins).
The source of admission was categorized as: (a) emergency room (ER), patients who were admitted after ER or family doctor visit or after emergency surgery were placed in this category, (b) post operative, following elective surgery, (c) other hospital, including ER, ward and PICU of that hospital and (d) paediatric ward of own hospital.
Referral source was categorized according to location of the referring hospital into: (i) Uthungulu district, in which the CKD clinic was located, (ii) Umkhanyakude and (iii) Zululand.
Funding source was categorized as in the analysis of contact details.
After computation, the variable was recoded into "0" if the mother has not taken advice/treatment from any of these sources and categorized as "no", and "1" if the mother has taken advice from one or more of these sources and categorized as "yes".
The data was recoded into "0" if the mother has no access to any of these sources and categorized as "no", and "1" if the mother had access to one or more of the above-mentioned sources and categorized as "yes".
