In general the classification of populations appeared rather uncorrelated with the geographical origin of rye accessions, but rather reflected the source of the accessions, and, to a degree, the improvement status of the accessions.
Our results indicate that geographic sources of the accessions in this study do not correspond well with the genetic distances between accessions and as a result the genetic relationships among exotic, local germplasm and cultivars are not clear.
The sources of the accessions with similarity to the pine BACs vary widely, including five gymnosperm species, 15 dicot and eight monocot species, 11 animals, three fungal species, a moss and one multicellular alga.
Our results indicate that the population structure of the assembled rye collection was mostly determined by the accessions source and improvement status and that the significant influence of accessions source seems to be at least partly attributable to the influence of reproduction methods on the genetic identity of rye accessions.
Again, a much greater proportion of variation within population than among populations was found: 90% and 10%, respectively, (P < 0.001), when accessions were grouped based on region of origin, and 87%and13%3%, (P < 0.001), when source and improvement status of accessions were used as criterion for grouping.
