Earlier this year, the duo offered this sonic matter to one lucky Berlin-based audience via a commissioned live performance.
This sonic matter is a rethinking of Empire, a piece Hart did a few years ago which was inspired by The Course of Empire, a five-part series of paintings by Thomas Cole. There are occasional sonic reminders of the subject matter, such as cinematic sound effects: the eerie muezzin wail on "England" drops you straight into Turkey itself, and a horn plays a military reveille on "The Glorious Land" (it's just as well the context has been flagged up in advance or else, given Harvey's enthusiasm for bloodsports, one might mistake it for a fox-hunting tally-ho).
It wasn't a mere matter of sonic eclecticism, the composer making sure there were enough ugly moments to balance out the pretty ones.
