Some schools impose a dizzying timetable of up to six weeks of mornings only, followed by afternoons only, with lunch sometimes taken at school, and sometimes not, while other heads take a different course.
Fourteen-year-old William Glass sends 1,500 text messages a month, sometimes during dinner and sometimes while at school.
He is now serving 30 months after being convicted of 14 charges of abuse of victims he sometimes picked at school prize-givings.

It seems that every day there are fresh reports in the local media about children being abused, sometimes at their schools, other times by family members, but mostly by figures of authority, trusted figures.
"I think sometimes people at schools are concerned they'll be blamed for the injury or death, or that it won't be good for the sport," Mueller said.
The University of Michigan is a public institution legally and morally bound by the First Amendment, and an image like this -- which cannot reasonably be interpreted as a threat -- is no less protected just because violent incidents sometimes occur at schools, or because of recent tragedies in the news.
