"Why should I be participating in something that does not allow me to participate in it?" Najee Ali, a Los Angeles-based activist and social justice campaigner, said that the black community was angry because the awards shows felt like "Hollywood is essentially spitting in our face".
"And she won't sit back and participate in something that was blatantly, patently unfair, illegal and wrong.
"This allows me to participate in something that's beautiful, a wonderful kind of activity, very spiritual".
"Very few of us up here want to have America seen as not participating in something that's important," Mr. Hagel said in a telephone interview.
The Herkimer Interfaith Clergy Council, an umbrella religious organization, said in a letter published in June by a local newspaper, The Evening Telegram, that it refused to "participate in something that will not allow all faith communities to be represented".
