John Locke's Some Thoughts concerning Education (1693) is often cited as an early Enlightenment emancipatory influence.
The chapter presents an overview of timber – its use historically, a basic understanding of material properties and how these effect the performance of timber, some exemplar case studies of modern applications, and some thoughts concerning sustainability and how timber is likely to be used in the future.
In laying out the argument, Barney offers an extensive and compelling look at a variety of pedagogical treatises, most notably John Locke's Some Thoughts concerning Education, a work that, in its emphasis on limits to personal liberty, may surprise those familiar primarily with Locke's Second Treatise on Government.
Locke does not dedicate much space in Some Thoughts Concerning Education to outlining a specific curriculum; he is more concerned with convincing his readers that education is about instilling virtue and what Western educators would now call critical-thinking skills.
