Asian countries build on achievements, making big progress on Millennium Development Goals New Delhi, 1 July – Southern Asia has made remarkable progress in achieving some Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but increased efforts are needed to meet others, according to a new UN report.
While most countries have made some progress with some of the MDGs, the progress towards achieving MDG4 (reducing child mortality) and MDG5 (reducing maternal mortality and improving maternal health) has been uneven and the pace is too slow to meet set targets in most African countries [ 5].
In fact, in too many nations – even some on track to meet some of the MDGs – gaps between the richest and poorest children are actually widening.
In some countries, MDG reports are prepared using data from national adaptations, and some national reports use the mapping and presentation features of DevInfo to produce graphics and presentation materials.
While we have made progress on some of the MDGs, indications are neutral and sometimes negative for others.
Some of the MDGs addressed by 2015 include MDG4: reducing child mortality; MDG6: combating HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria and other diseases, and MDG8: developing global partnerships.
We discuss below some of the MDGs, their indicators of progress, and the role longitudinal data generated from INDEPTH member centres could play in evaluating these.
Therefore, it is necessary to develop a strategic relationship with partners for a sufficiently longer period and for predictability of funds so as not to jeopardize the sustainability of the health system and reverse the gains achieved in some of the MDGs such as the one related to reducing childhood mortality.
