The difference in the number of alpha and beta genes has been attributed to an evolutionary birth-and-death process in which new MHC genes have been created by repeated gene duplication, with some duplicate genes subsequently being deleted or becoming nonfunctional through the accumulation of deleterious mutations [7].
In birth-and-death evolution, new genes are created by gene duplication, with some duplicate genes remaining in the genome, whereas others are inactivated (converted to pseudogenes) or deleted from the genome outright.
Whilst a vast majority of the duplicated genome was lost, some duplicate gene copies were retained and subsequently underwent differentiation to form distinct members of the evolving multigene families.
These stringent criteria were used to avoid false-positive predictions even though some known duplicate genes (such as some duplicate copies that were formed in whole genome duplication [WGD]) were excluded from the list.
