The usual response is to take the random sequences to be the intersection of all measure one subsets of the space which have 'nice' properties, and to give some principled delimitation of which properties are to count as 'nice' and why.
To avoid some of the problems with the "species" delimitation, some authors prefer to use "functional diversity": the amount and types of microbial proteins (e.g., functions) in the sample [e.g., [129]], rather than "species" diversity.
