Suppose one knows some solution path and wants to find out how nearby solution paths behave.
By studying how this "point of first return" behaves, information is gained about these nearby solution paths.
Well-structured problems (also called well-defined problems) have clear solution paths: the problem solver is usually able to specify, with relative ease, all the steps that must be taken to reach a solution.
