Preliminary attempts to create such a "fossil record" of merging galaxies using Hubble pictures support the theory that ellipticals can form from colliding spirals, according to Bradley Whitmore, of STScI, who will publish a five-snapshot sequence in November in the Astronomical Journal.

A snapshot flash sequence was used, with TR = 27.9 ms, TE = 10 ms, flip angle = 7°, matrix size 128×32 (zero filled at 128×128).
These data give a snapshot of sequence evolution over a much shorter time period than the millions of years that separate sister species, providing the opportunity to capture bias inducing processes in action.
